Document exposure details for each frame on a roll of film
Overview
The Field Recorder is a specialized tool in Filmbase that allows you to document detailed exposure information for each frame on a roll of film. This frame-by-frame logging system helps you learn from your results and improve your technique by connecting exposure settings with final images.
Accessing Field Recorder
To access the Field Recorder:
- Navigate to the Tools section in the left sidebar
- Click on "Field Recorder"
The Field Recorder requires a PRO membership to access.
Field Recorder Interface
The Field Recorder interface is organized to track detailed exposure information for each frame:
- Roll Selection: Choose a roll from your Film Log
- Camera Information: Displays the camera used for the selected roll
- Lens Information: Record the lens used for the selected frame
- Frame Navigation: Navigate between frames on the roll
- Exposure Settings: Record aperture, shutter speed, and ISO
- Exposure Compensation: Note any exposure adjustments
- Location: Record the location of the frame. Location is automatically recorded if you have location services enabled in your browser.
- Date and Time: Record the date and time of the frame
- Notes: Add frame-specific observations or context
Using Field Recorder
Selecting a Roll
- Use the "ROLL" dropdown to select a roll from your Film Log
- The camera information will automatically populate based on your Film Log entry
Recording Frame Information
For each frame on the roll:
- Navigate to the correct frame number using the frame navigation controls
- Select the lens used
- Set the aperture (f-stop) value
- Set the shutter speed
- Confirm the ISO (typically the same for the entire roll)
- Adjust exposure compensation if needed
- Add any frame-specific notes
- Click the camera button to save the frame information
Navigation Between Frames
- Use the up/down arrows next to the frame number to move between frames
- The Field Recorder shows your current position (e.g., "Frame 38 of 37")
Advanced Usage
- When encountering errors (e.g., "Position update is unavailable"), you can click "Try Again" to resolve
- Date and timestamp information is automatically recorded for each frame
- For cameras with interchangeable lenses, you can select different lenses for each frame
Practical Applications
The Field Recorder is particularly valuable for:
- Learning Exposure: Track settings to understand what works best in different conditions
- Testing New Film: Record detailed information when trying new film stocks
- Lens Comparison: Document performance of different lenses on the same roll
- Technique Refinement: Identify patterns in successful vs. unsuccessful exposures

Integration with Other Modules
The Field Recorder connects directly with:
- Film Log: Pulls roll information from your logged entries
- EXIF Editor: Information recorded can be embedded into scan metadata
- Gear Settings: Uses cameras and lenses configured in your profile

- Real-time Logging: When possible, log frame information during or immediately after shooting
- Consistent Detail: Maintain the same level of detail across all frames for better analysis
- Contextual Notes: Include lighting conditions and creative intent in your notes

Mobile Usage
While Filmbase is primarily a web application, the Field Recorder is designed to be mobile-friendly:
- If you have mobile data, you can use the Field Recorder on the go
- For offline shooting, consider keeping notes in a pocket notebook and transferring to Field Recorder later
- Mobile-friendly interface allows for in-field updates when you have connectivity
