Field Recorder

Document exposure details for each frame on a roll of film

Overview

The Field Recorder is a specialized tool in Filmbase that allows you to document detailed exposure information for each frame on a roll of film. This frame-by-frame logging system helps you learn from your results and improve your technique by connecting exposure settings with final images.

Accessing Field Recorder

To access the Field Recorder:

  1. Navigate to the Tools section in the left sidebar
  2. Click on "Field Recorder"

The Field Recorder requires a PRO membership to access.

Field Recorder Interface

The Field Recorder interface is organized to track detailed exposure information for each frame:

  • Roll Selection: Choose a roll from your Film Log
  • Camera Information: Displays the camera used for the selected roll
  • Lens Information: Record the lens used for the selected frame
  • Frame Navigation: Navigate between frames on the roll
  • Exposure Settings: Record aperture, shutter speed, and ISO
  • Exposure Compensation: Note any exposure adjustments
  • Location: Record the location of the frame. Location is automatically recorded if you have location services enabled in your browser.
  • Date and Time: Record the date and time of the frame
  • Notes: Add frame-specific observations or context

Using Field Recorder

Selecting a Roll

  1. Use the "ROLL" dropdown to select a roll from your Film Log

  8. Click the camera button to save the frame information
  • Use the up/down arrows next to the frame number to move between frames
  • The Field Recorder shows your current position (e.g., "Frame 38 of 37")

Advanced Usage

  • When encountering errors (e.g., "Position update is unavailable"), you can click "Try Again" to resolve
  • Date and timestamp information is automatically recorded for each frame
  • For cameras with interchangeable lenses, you can select different lenses for each frame

Practical Applications

The Field Recorder is particularly valuable for:

  • Learning Exposure: Track settings to understand what works best in different conditions
  • Testing New Film: Record detailed information when trying new film stocks
  • Lens Comparison: Document performance of different lenses on the same roll
  • Technique Refinement: Identify patterns in successful vs. unsuccessful exposures
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose issues by correlating technical problems with specific settings.

Integration with Other Modules

The Field Recorder connects directly with:

  • Film Log: Pulls roll information from your logged entries
  • EXIF Editor: Information recorded can be embedded into scan metadata
  • Gear Settings: Uses cameras and lenses configured in your profile

Best Practices

  • Real-time Logging: When possible, log frame information during or immediately after shooting
  • Consistent Detail: Maintain the same level of detail across all frames for better analysis
  • Contextual Notes: Include lighting conditions and creative intent in your notes
  • Complete Information: Fill out all fields for maximum learning value
  • Regular Review: Compare your Field Recorder logs with developed images to improve

Mobile Usage

While Filmbase is primarily a web application, the Field Recorder is designed to be mobile-friendly:

  • If you have mobile data, you can use the Field Recorder on the go
  • For offline shooting, consider keeping notes in a pocket notebook and transferring to Field Recorder later
  • Mobile-friendly interface allows for in-field updates when you have connectivity
